A 32-year-old employee in Penang has been working and contributing to EPF for eight years. She has never checked her EPF balance, does not know how much she has saved, has never seen the annual dividend statement, and has no idea who her EPF beneficiary is — if she even has one. When a colleague mentions checking his EPF balance on his phone in 30 seconds, she realises she has been ignoring her largest financial asset for nearly a decade.

EPF i-Akaun is the online portal and mobile app that gives every KWSP member direct access to their accounts — balance checks, contribution history, dividend statements, nomination management, and withdrawal applications, all from a phone or computer. It is free, it is available in English and Bahasa Malaysia, and it is the primary way EPF now processes transactions.

This guide covers everything you can do with i-Akaun in 2026, from registration through to applying for a withdrawal.

What Is i-Akaun?

i-Akaun is KWSP's member portal, available in two forms:

  • i-Akaun (Web): The browser-based portal at secure.kwsp.gov.my. Accessible from any device with internet.
  • i-Akaun (Mobile): The smartphone app available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Functionally identical to the web version but with biometric login (fingerprint, face recognition) for faster access.

Both versions provide the same features — balance enquiry, statement download, nomination update, and withdrawal application. The mobile app is more convenient for quick balance checks. The web version is easier for downloading and printing statements.

How to Register for i-Akaun

Step 1: Obtain your EPF member number

Your EPF member number is on your payslip (it may appear as "KWSP No." or "EPF No."), on your annual EPF statement if you have received one, or you can obtain it from your employer's HR department. If you have never contributed to EPF, you cannot register for i-Akaun until your first contribution is posted.

Step 2: Visit an EPF kiosk or counter for activation

This step cannot be skipped. For security reasons, KWSP requires first-time i-Akaun registration to be done in person at an EPF branch or self-service kiosk (Kiosk Perkhidmatan KWSP). You cannot fully activate i-Akaun purely online.

At an EPF branch: Visit any EPF branch with your NRIC. Inform the counter that you want to register for i-Akaun. The officer will verify your identity and issue a temporary activation code.

At an EPF kiosk: Many EPF branches and selected shopping malls have self-service kiosks. Insert your NRIC into the kiosk, follow the on-screen prompts to request i-Akaun activation, and the kiosk issues the activation code.

Step 3: Complete registration online

Once you have the activation code:

  1. Go to secure.kwsp.gov.my and click "Register" or "First Time Login"
  2. Enter your NRIC number and the activation code
  3. Create a user ID and password (minimum 8 characters, must contain letters and numbers)
  4. Set security questions (mother's maiden name, first school, etc.) — choose answers you will remember
  5. Enter your mobile number for SMS TAC (Transaction Authorisation Code)
  6. Enter your email address
  7. Accept the terms and conditions
  8. Submit

You will receive a confirmation SMS and email. You can now log in to i-Akaun immediately.

Registration for employers

If you are an employer, employer i-Akaun registration is separate. Visit assist.perkeso.gov.my is for SOCSO — the EPF employer portal is at secure.kwsp.gov.my under the "Employer" login section, using your employer EPF registration number.

How to Check Your EPF Balance

Via i-Akaun mobile app

The fastest method. Open the app, authenticate with fingerprint or password, and your total EPF balance appears on the home screen — broken down by Account 1, Account 2, and Account 3. The app also shows the most recent contribution posted and the date.

Via i-Akaun web

Log in to secure.kwsp.gov.my. From the dashboard, select "Penyata Akaun" (Account Statement). The screen displays:

  • Total balance
  • Account 1 (Akaun Persaraan) balance — 75% of new contributions
  • Account 2 (Akaun Sejahtera) balance — 15% of new contributions
  • Account 3 (Akaun Fleksibel) balance — 10% of new contributions
  • Most recent contribution month and amount
  • Most recent dividend credited

Via SMS (no smartphone required)

KWSP provides a basic SMS balance check service. Send the following to the KWSP SMS number (check the KWSP website for the current number, as it changes periodically):

BAL <space> <NRIC number>

KWSP replies with your total balance within a few minutes. Standard SMS charges apply. This method shows total balance only — not the breakdown by account.

How to Download Your EPF Statement

Annual statement (Penyata Tahunan)

  1. Log in to i-Akaun web
  2. Navigate to "Penyata" → "Penyata Tahunan"
  3. Select the year you want
  4. Click "Muat Turun" (Download)
  5. The statement downloads as a PDF

The annual statement shows:

  • Opening balance as of 1 January
  • All employer and employee contributions for the year, month by month
  • Total contributions for the year
  • Annual dividend declared and credited
  • Closing balance as of 31 December

Contribution history (Penyata Caruman)

For a detailed month-by-month view of contributions:

  1. Log in to i-Akaun
  2. Navigate to "Penyata" → "Penyata Caruman"
  3. Select the date range
  4. The system displays every contribution posted — amount, employer name, contribution month, and posting date
  5. You can download as PDF or export as CSV for personal record-keeping

This statement is useful for verifying that your employer is remitting contributions correctly and on time. Cross-reference against your payslips.

How to Update Your EPF Nomination Online

EPF nomination (penamaan benefisiari) determines who receives your EPF savings if you pass away. By default, if you have no nomination, your legal next of kin must go through a court process (Letter of Administration or Grant of Probate) to access your EPF funds — a process that takes 6 to 12 months. A valid nomination makes the payout immediate.

Updating via i-Akaun

  1. Log in to i-Akaun
  2. Navigate to "Pengurusan Akaun" → "Penamaan Benefisiari"
  3. Enter the nominee's full name, NRIC number, and relationship to you
  4. Specify the percentage share (if multiple nominees, total must equal 100%)
  5. Confirm with SMS TAC
  6. The system updates your nomination immediately

Who can be a nominee

  • Spouse
  • Children (including adopted children)
  • Parents
  • Siblings
  • Any individual (not necessarily a relative) — but naming non-family members may attract additional scrutiny

You can name up to 6 nominees. You can change or revoke a nomination at any time through i-Akaun or at an EPF counter.

How to Apply for EPF Withdrawal Online

Most EPF withdrawals can now be applied for entirely online via i-Akaun. This is a significant change from the pre-2020 era when almost all withdrawals required over-the-counter visits.

Account 2 withdrawals (housing, education, medical, Hajj, PR1MA)

  1. Log in to i-Akaun
  2. Navigate to "Pengeluaran" → select the withdrawal type
  3. Upload the required supporting documents (scanned or photographed — must be clear and legible)
  4. Enter the withdrawal amount (subject to Account 2 balance and purpose-specific limits)
  5. Confirm bank account details for payment
  6. Authenticate with SMS TAC
  7. Submit

Processing time: 14 to 30 working days, depending on the withdrawal type and the completeness of the documentation.

Account 3 withdrawals (flexible, any purpose)

  1. Log in to i-Akaun
  2. Navigate to "Pengeluaran" → "Pengeluaran Akaun Fleksibel"
  3. Enter the withdrawal amount (minimum RM50, up to the Account 3 balance)
  4. Confirm bank account details
  5. Authenticate with SMS TAC
  6. Submit

Processing time: 7 to 14 working days. Account 3 withdrawals are simpler because no supporting documents are required and no specific purpose must be demonstrated.

Age 55 / 60 full withdrawal

i-Akaun Security and Common Issues

SMS TAC not received

The most common i-Akaun issue. Causes:

  • Mobile number on record with KWSP is outdated (you changed phone numbers and never updated EPF)
  • Phone is in an area with poor reception
  • SMS is blocked by your phone's spam filter

Fix: Update your mobile number at an EPF kiosk or counter. You need your NRIC and your current mobile phone. This is worth doing proactively — most i-Akaun functions require SMS TAC, and if your phone number is wrong, you are locked out of withdrawals and nomination changes.

Account locked after multiple failed login attempts

After 3 failed password attempts, i-Akaun locks your account for security. To unlock:

  1. Use the "Forgot Password" function on the login page
  2. Follow the reset process (requires SMS TAC to your registered phone)
  3. If you cannot reset online, visit an EPF branch with your NRIC

Biometric login on the app

The i-Akaun mobile app supports fingerprint and face recognition login. This does not replace your password — it stores your password securely in the phone and uses biometrics as a convenience unlock. You still need the password when logging in on a new device.

FAQ

Can I register for i-Akaun without visiting an EPF branch?

The initial activation requires an in-person visit to an EPF branch or kiosk — there is no purely online registration for first-time users. This is a security measure. However, once your account is activated, all subsequent transactions (balance checks, nomination updates, withdrawals) can be done entirely online.

Can I use i-Akaun if I no longer work in Malaysia?

Yes. Your i-Akaun remains active after you stop working in Malaysia. You can log in, check your balance, and update your details from overseas. However, withdrawals while abroad may require additional verification — contact KWSP before leaving Malaysia to ensure your mobile number and email are current for SMS TAC delivery.

Why does my i-Akaun show a different balance from my payslip calculations?

Possible reasons: the most recent month's contribution has not been posted yet (employers have until the 15th of the following month to remit), there is a discrepancy between what your employer deducted and what they remitted, or your employer's contribution was allocated to a different EPF account number. Check the contribution history in i-Akaun against your payslips for the last 3 months. If there is a persistent discrepancy, ask your HR department for the EPF submission receipt for the relevant months.

Can I use i-Akaun to make voluntary EPF contributions?

Yes. i-Akaun supports voluntary self-contribution (Caruman Sukarela). Navigate to "Caruman" → "Caruman Sukarela" and enter the amount. Payment is made via FPX online banking. The minimum voluntary contribution is typically RM50. Voluntary contributions are allocated to Account 1 (70%), Account 2 (20%), and Account 3 (10%) in the current allocation ratio unless you specify otherwise.

Is the i-Akaun app the same for Android and iPhone?

Functionally, yes. The app is identical across platforms. The only difference is the biometric login method — Face ID on iPhone, fingerprint or face recognition on Android (depending on device capabilities).

What do I do if I suspect someone accessed my i-Akaun without my permission?

Immediately call the KWSP Contact Centre at 03-8922 6000 and report the suspected unauthorised access. Change your i-Akaun password immediately. Check your nomination and withdrawal history for any unauthorised changes. If you believe a withdrawal was made fraudulently, file a police report and bring it to the nearest EPF branch. KWSP treats unauthorised access seriously and can freeze the account pending investigation.

i-Akaun is the control panel for the largest financial asset most Malaysians own — and it takes 15 minutes to activate at a kiosk and a lifetime to benefit from. Register, log in, check your balance, download your statement, and make sure your nomination is current. These are not annual chores — they are the minimum engagement you should have with your retirement savings.
